AMHERST JUNCTION, WI (WSAU) -  An Amherst Junction couple was hospitalized and a Stevens Point man arrested after a Saturday morning crash. Portage County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Nicki Lukas says 28-year-old John M. Koback is jailed after driving his truck through an above-ground swimming pool and then into the bedroom of a house at 4:37 a.m. The force of the truck hitting the house caused the couple to be thrown from their bed, through a wall and into the next room.

The person who reported the crash to authorities said there was also a significant gas leak.

The names of the injured have not been released, but Sgt. Lukas says they went to St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point with non-life threatening injuries.

Koback allegedly backed his truck out of the house and drove away, but was soon apprehended when his truck caught fire a short distance away near Amherst. Officers responding to the vehicle fire noticed he was intoxicated and had debris from the house crash on the truck.

Koback will remain in the Portage County Jail until he has an initial court appearance, which will probably happen Monday. He has a history of leaving the scene of accidents, as he was convicted of that and operating without a license in 2008.

Amherst Fire Department, Amherst Rescue, and Amherst First Responders assisted the Portage County Sheriff's Department at the scene.  The investigation is continuing.
