DOJ to provide additional training in dealing domestic issues in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - The state Justice Department says it will offer additional training to Milwaukee area police officers for handling domestic violence cases.

That’s after the mass shootings at a Brookfield spa on October 21st in which Radcliffe Haughton killed his wife and two others, and wounded four other women before turning the gun on himself.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said Tuesdday that Brown Deer Police Chief Steve Rinzel asked his department for additional training for all Milwaukee area police.

Rinzel’s agency has been on the hot seat for not arresting anyone right after a standoff last year in which Haughton apparently pointed a gun at his estranged wife.

Van Hollen said it’s not clear whether the police “missed opportunities for intervention.” But he said domestic violence is a complex problem, and he’ll work with Rinzel and others to make sure officers get the types of training they want.
