First public hearing on Gov. Walker's budget plan in Greenfield Thursday

GREENFIELD, WI (WTAQ) - The first of four official public hearings will be held this week on the state budget for the next two years, as proposed by Governor Scott Walker.

The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee plans to hear a day full of testimony on Thursday in the Milwaukee suburb of Greenfield.

Other hearings are scheduled later this month in Green Bay, Wisconsin Dells, and Baldwin in the far western part of the state.

Minority Democrats said the GOP stayed away from places that could allow more competition for public schools, in the form of a private school voucher expansion in Walker’s budget.

The Democrats say they’ll hold their own hearings in some of those places, even though they don’t have the votes to stop whatever the GOP endorses.

After the hearings, the finance panel will start making revisions to the budget. The voucher proposal is one of the most likely changes, since most Republican senators said the Walker plan is too much.

Once the committee adopts its budget, the full Legislature will act on it. Final approval is expected by late June. The new two-year package is due to take effect July 1st.
