MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Seven retired judges have applied for a seat on the state board that runs elections and investigates ethics violations in state and local governments.

Thomas Cane is starting his final month of a six-year term on the Government Accountability Board.

Tuesday, the board’s candidate committee will eliminate five applicants, and nominate the other two to Governor Scott Walker for his appointment. The appointee must then be confirmed by the Senate.

If Walker does not make an appointment, Cane will continue to serve. He’s a retired appeals judge from Wausau.

The Accountability Board is made up of six retired judges. It was established in 2008, replacing the old elections and ethics boards which were made up of political appointees.
