PCA worker slowly improves after burning incident at Tomahawk plant

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A worker is slowly getting better after he was burned at a Tomahawk packaging plant last month.

53-year-old Mike Slesicki of Tomahawk is off the critical list, and has been upgraded to fair condition at the UW Hospital’s Burn Center in Madison.

Slesicki was injured on March 5th at the Packaging Corporation of America. The company said he was re-igniting a boiler that was down for maintenance, and he was following standard operating procedures when the boiler flared back at him.

PCA spokesman Dave Blank says his company’s investigation is continuing. And the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration plans to return to the plant as part of its six-month investigation.

The Tomahawk plant makes container board and corrugated packaging materials. Five workers were killed at that plant in a pair of mishaps since 2008.
