UW officials ask Joint Finance Committee to approve proposed increases to funding

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Top University of Wisconsin officials are calling on the Joint Finance Committee to approve Governor Walker's budget for the UW-System.

Officials sent an open letter to the Committee today that approves a 181 million dollar budget increase for the System over the next two years. UW-Marathon County dean Keith Montgomery says that's an investment for the future. "It has the potential for the UW to address issues that would minimize tuition increases for students." Around 23 million dollars of that funding would go towards new programming including the proposed Flexible Options programming and a new rural medicine initiative with Marshfield Clinic.

In the letter signed by every head of campus in the System, the officials say most of that funding will be going to cover debt service for previously approved construction projects, utilities, fringe benefits, and other ongoing fixed costs.

The Joint Finance Committee will be bringing their panel to public hearings across the state for residents to argue for and against funding measures over the next three weeks.
