Study: Wisconsin has nation's 4th highest rate of exonerated convicts

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin has the nation’s fourth-highest rate of wrongly-convicted prisoners who get exonerated.

That’s according to a new study from the National Registry of Exonerations. It said that 27 Wisconsinites were exonerated between 1989 and December of last year.

When state populations are taken into account, only 3 other states have higher exoneration rates. Illinois is the highest, followed by Louisiana, New York, and then Wisconsin.

California had the most wrongly-convicted prisoners freed by raw numbers – 119. Texas, Illinois, and New York rounded out that Top 4.

Nationally, 1,050 convicts were later proclaimed innocent over the last 23 years.

The Exoneration Registry is run by the Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University near Chicago.
