Brewers drop 5 straight, get swept by D-Backs with 11-inning loss Sunday

MILWAUKEE, WI  (WSAU)  -  The Arizona Diamondbacks swept their three game series at Miller Park with an 8-7 win Sunday. That’s the first time Arizona has ever swept Milwaukee. The Brewers closed a 6-2 lead late in the game and went into extra innings tied at 6.

Arizona managed to get some hits off Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo, but Milwaukee kept chipping away at the Diamondbacks. Gallardo was 7-0 with a 1.09 ERA against the D-Backs until today, and had never lost a game to the them. Gallardo was pulled after six innings.

Pinch-hitter Josh Prince doubled to lead off the ninth, and Norichika Aoki drove him home when he singled to right. Norichika Aoki had four hits himself, and Jonathan Lucroy batted him in twice, including the game tying run in the 9th.

Cliff Pennington led off the 11th inning with a double off Brewers closer John Axford before Wisconsin native Eric Hinske followed with a long Arizona home run to center.

Ryan Braun did not play, but they did send him to the on-deck circle in the 11th as a bluff before sending pitcher Kyle Loesch to bat. Milwaukee was out of eligible utility players and Braun was not well enough to play, so Loesch had to bat.

The Brewers hit the road for the first time this season as they start a three game series in Chicago Monday against the Cubs.

Monday's series opener against the Cubs starts with pregame programming on WSAU 550 AM and 99.9 FM at 12:35 p.m.
