Stevens Point School Board unable to agree on President Monday

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  Division and trust problems among school board members led to a marathon meeting with little decided Monday night. The Stevens Point School Board tried to select their officers. After more than five hours and 24 ballots, they remained deadlocked and could not select a board president.

It wasn’t until after 11:00 p.m. that Renae Sheibley was selected as Vice President, but she resigned deciding she would rather be President. Neither Sheibley, Angel Faxon, or new board member Terry Rothman had the five required votes to win. Another complication is one of the nine board seats is vacant and needs to be appointed.

Late in the evening, board members began to say why they could not support some of their fellow board members in a leadership role. Renae Sheibley got that conversation going. “Since the bigger issue is, and we’ve all admitted it, is trust or whatever, we have nothing to gain and nothing to lose by not sitting here and hashing out some of the things we’re concerned about, like what would your concerns be with me as president? What would my concerns be with Terry as president? Can we just talk about a few of them? I mean, there’s nothing you’re going to ask me that I’m not going to answer you honestly, so you might as well just ask me.”

Terry Rothman says he can’t support Scheibley as president. “I want a board president that’s for everybody, not just for a specific group. If you get elected president, you’re going to be leaning towards teachers and employees. We need somebody that’s for the whole thing, for the community.”

Scheibley wants more school board experience before she could support Rothman. “With all due respect Terry, I’m just not willing to vote for you because you haven’t been on the board before. I understand you’ve got a lot of leadership and things, but I just, you know, I just, I just can’t.”

Angel Faxon is also looking for someone she can trust as board president. “The President has to learn not to talk poorly about other board members with other people in the community, because it gets back to us. Calling us names, unacceptable. You know, that’s that board ethics and conduct. You know, that’s not right.”

Just before midnight, the board again selected Scheibley as the Vice President, which she hinted she may resign from after they fill the open seat and select a President.

They meet again May 13th.
