STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - It won’t be long until classes start again, and for incoming freshmen, that means getting used to living away from home... in a small space... and maybe with someone you’ve never met before.

Kate Reck is the Information and Outreach Coordinator for Residential Living at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. She says UW staff is busy behind the scenes preparing for over 3,400 students that will be moving into dorms shortly. “We’re busy assisting individuals with their assignments and getting questions answered for our students as they are coming in. Our staff is getting the buildings prepared, cleaning, shampooing carpets, and then also our fall staff has begun training for their positions for fall.”

Incoming students register with the Residential Living office, and they use a computer program to place the students with roommates in specific halls based on the student’s applications. “We utilize a process that takes a look at the living options they’re interested in doing. We have a number of them, anything from the eco-hall to our wellness hall, a quiet community, alcohol free community, our language hall. They answer those questions for us and we place them to the best of our ability.”

Reck says incoming students that haven’t applied for residential living assignments should do so immediately. She says their office does their best to work with last-minute applicants on a case by case basis, so getting signed up now is better than later.

Students will be moving into the dorms at the end of the month. “We will begin welcoming students who are new to UW Stevens Point on Thursday, August 29th, and then returning students will start moving in on Sunday, September 1st.”

UWSP has 12 traditional residence halls, The Suites at 201 Reserve, and Hyer Hall for students 21 and older.
