MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) - Another scam nearly cost a Lincoln County woman 12-hundred dollars.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department investigators assisted a Town of Schley woman Friday morning. She had received a phone call from a young male saying he was her grandson and had been arrested and jailed in Mexico. Then, a second male got on the phone and claimed to be from the U.S. Embassy and gave the woman instructions on how to wire his bail money.
The woman wired over 12-hundred dollars to the fake grandson. She was just about to call and give them the four digit pin number needed to collect the funds, but became suspicious and called the sheriff’s department.
Deputies were able to check and verify her real grandson was safe and not in a Mexican jail. Deputies also were able to get Western Union to refund the woman’s money.
