WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Wausau is preparing to enact a public intoxication ordinance to help address some problems in city parks and other public places. Last week, City Council members discussed how extreme drunkenness has brought some bad behavior into Wausau’s public places that should be family friendly.
The Public Health and Safety Committee is forwarding an ordinance recommending fines for people who are visibly intoxicated or incapacitated and also creating a public nuisance to be fined $150 dollars plus court fees. Those fines jump to $300 for subsequent offenses.
The City Council already gave police officers the authority to ban repeat offenders from public parks. Judges can also now set bond conditions for offenders to further prevent repeat problems.
The ordinance will be voted on by the full Wausau City Council next month.
