Electronics recycling event Saturday in Merrill

MERRILL, Wis. (WXPR) - Your electronic waste could help build housing for the poor.  Kiwanis Club of greater Merrill and Good News Project of Wausau are holding a computer and electronics recycling event this weekend at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

Mike Husnick is the project manager for the Good News Project. He says they're taking "anything with a cord", like TV's computers, laptops and associated equipment, fax machines, copiers, microwaves, cellphones and the like. Husnick says anyone can come to the event, not just Lincoln county residents.

The Good News Project is a non-profit based in Wausau, serving the local community, but also serve a community in the West Indies. "We partner with other organizations like schools and hospitals. The money we're collecting today, we're charging 30 cents a pound to recycle the electronics. The money we collect here today goes toward that mission and also toward the local mission of the Kiwanis Club in Merrill."

The collection is Saturday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at the "Sell" Building at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. Husnick says another positive is the landfills are spared having nasty metals in them like mercury commonly used in electronics.
