Job seekers on unemployment need to sign up with Job Center database

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - You'll have to sign up with the state's Job Center program to claim unemployment in the coming months.

Starting in October, people on unemployment will have to either register in person or online with the Job Center of Wisconsin as part of federal changes to UI. Workforce development secretary Reggie Newson says they're welcoming the change. "We'll be able to have technology and well trained staff to help them. We want to get them to the job centers, get resumes and profiles."

Newson says his department is working to prepare for more people in the job center process. "We're going to be retooling and retraining our staff and our local not-for-profit service providers to get them trained to better help and better assist individuals." He says the move will help the state continue its steady job growth, along with other programs and initiatives being pushed by the governor. "That's why the governor has pushed the Wisconsin Fast Forward agenda, and the 15 million dollars in worker training grants, that's why we've reset the button on apprenticeship in Wisconsin."

Starting October 13, people applying for UI will have to register within 14 days of the start of their claim. This includes filling out a state Job Match profile or putting a resume on file with the department. “It is to the advantage of unemployed individuals to make a direct link with Wisconsin Job Service and other workforce partners, who are based in every corner of the state and can help them find new jobs.”

You can find out more about the changes online from the Job Center's website.
