Consultants report on Portage County Health Care Center discussion Wednesday

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- The long term future of the Portage County Health Care Center in Stevens Point will be discussed Wednesday afternoon.

County Executive Patty Dreier says the County Board hired consultants to review the operations of the center, and they are giving their first review. Dreier says if the county remains in the healthcare business, they want to do it right, and this study will help guide them. Dreier says the present facility may need some changes, remodelling, or even replacement, but that will take more analysis. She says they need to know, “whether or not it is cost-effective to remodel the center to create private rooms and private bathrooms for today’s baby boomers, or to build a new facility and (there’s) lots of choices in between those two.”

The study was done by Shenk and Community Living Solutions to study both the operations and the physical building of the present Portage County Health Care Center. Dreier says there are lots of decisions that will need to be made, and this is very early in the process. “As we digest what’s in this document, there are a lot of benchmarks, a lot of recommendations or opportunities that are included in this document, but it doesn’t mean that Portage County is going to take all of these steps forward. It may be that we pick and choose what we would like to do.”

PCHCC Oversight Committee will get the first presentation from the consultants at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lincoln Center.
