MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) --
Crooks are finding new ways to cheat you out of your money. Investigators are checking into a new scam in the Merrill area.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies say a Town of Merrill woman was contacted by a would be scammer on Thursday morning. The woman had gone on a web site of a funeral home in south central Wisconsin and left an online condolence for a family friend who had passed away.
It turns out that was not a safe thing to do. The scammer used the link on the web site that allows others to see the email addresses of those posting and sent the potential victim an email. That fake email informed the potential victim that due to a car crash involving other family members, she was now the beneficiary of the man’s estate which was valued at over one million dollars. The scammer asked the woman to forward her bank account numbers and he would begin the process of sending her the money.
The woman did not do what was asked of her. Instead, the woman called the Sheriff’s Office. The funeral home was also contacted, and they were going to alert others about the scam. The funeral home also removed the email link from their web page.
Deputies remind everyone to never give personal information such as bank account numbers to anyone you don’t know, especially online.
