WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) -- An interesting political race is brewing in Wisconsin Rapids. It’s the former mayor taking on the present mayor. Mary Jo Carson retired from office nearly two years ago and endorsed Zach Vruwink to succeed her. Now, Carson is coming out of retirement to challenge Vruwink.
Carson has been critical of Vruwink’s leadership and his style of managing city business away from his desk. Vruwink believes he is more effective letting department heads answer specific questions in their area of expertise, and that it is important to represent the city at certain state and national functions.
Carson served three terms before retiring. Vruwink is finishing his first term as the Wisconsin Rapids mayor. Both must have their nomination papers turned in by January 7th to be on the spring ballot.
