School district may shut down if referendum fails

THREE LAKES, Wisc (WSAU) Leaders in the Three Lakes school district say if a referendum fails this month, the school district may not be viable. They say the district might be disbanded and students sent to neighboring schools.

Voters will decide whether the district can exceed its spending limit by $2-million for each of the next five years on February 19.

Enrollment has dropped by 200 students between 1998 and this year. Administrator George Karling says that means less state aid, to the point where the school district would be insolvent if it can't go over its borrowing limit.

If approved, school taxes would go up by about $58 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home. If the district shuts down, school taxes could go up in the neighboring districts that take in Three Lakes students.
