Will Packers Franchise Jennings?

GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) N-F-L-Dot-Com says the Green Bay Packers are thinking about using their franchise tag to keep receiver Greg Jennings around for at least one more year. If they do, the tag requires that Jennings get just over 10-million dollars for next season.

We’ll find out in the next couple weeks what Green Bay decides to do, as the mid-March free agent signing period gets closer. It appears that the Packer brain-trust does not want to risk losing the 29-year-old Jennings, despite lack of a media speculation about his possible future. Or a sign-and-trade deal could be in the offing – but observers say the odds of that are slim.

Jennings is an unrestricted free agent, and the Packers would lose him if he signs somewhere else. Media reports say his contract value has diminished after his abdominal surgery which kept him out of action for two months this past season.

If the Packers do franchise Jennings, all of his salary would be put on this year’s cap. And then the front office would probably have to make other decisions to reduce the cap – like possibly cutting tight end Jermichael Finley.

At the N-F-L Scouting Combine over the weekend, Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy said he’d feel comfortable about going with a lineup with receivers James Jones, Randall Cobb, and Jordy Nelson – with Jeremy Ross and Jarrett Boykin as the top back-ups.
