Frac permit generates flack for city leaders

WABASHA, MN. (WSAU) - Wabasha Minnesota’s city leaders are being criticized for a recent permit they approved allowing constructin of a frac sand loading facility. Now, a Wabasha citizens group has filed an appeal to the conditional use permit city leaders issued to Superior Sands last month.

The "Friends of Wabasha" filed their appeal Monday with the City Planning Commission. The permit will allow Superior Sands to build a loading facility to transfer silica sand brought by trucks onto Canadian Pacific trains for transport oil and gas fields. The permit granted in December allows up to 250 trucks to enter and exit Wabasha each day.

The opposing group claims the permit was issued without assessing impacts on downtown businesses, traffic, tourism, and the local hospital.
