Wausau city council votes to review outdated council rules

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Wausau City Council members will be conducting a review of the council's own rules in the near future.

The council agreed on a unanimous vote to bring a review of the council's rules and governance policies to a committee of the whole meeting in the near future.

The matter was brought before the council Tuesday after a suspension of the rules. Alderman Keene Winters asked for a discussion and action on a measure that would require councilmembers to have more accountability with their contacts with the public by using email for official business and reporting lobbying efforts.

That measure was voted down, but allowed for a discussion on the rules. Council president Lisa Rasmussen says the rules as they are currently written are out of date and archaic and could use a revamp by the committee of the whole and not any one committee. "The rules that govern the council needs to come from within itself. The committee of the whole structure allows for proper discussion."

The mayor would have to announce and call for that meeting under the ordinances of the city.
