Gov. Walker: Extra school aid could go to bonuses

by

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker said a little bit more Friday about what he has in mind for public schools and their teachers in the next state budget.

The Republican Walker spoke to the 92nd annual State Education Convention in Milwaukee – and he repeated that he would propose additional state aid to school districts with high student performance.

He added that the funding could be given to the best teachers in those districts as bonuses. And the governor promised an increase in general aid for all school districts – as well as the special merit funding.

That drew applause from the teachers, administrators, and other education associates from around the state. And it was a reversal from two years ago, when many teachers left their classrooms to go to the State Capitol, and protest against Walker’s measure which virtually ended their collective bargaining privileges.

Walker also said he would provide incentives to lower-performing schools, if they draft plans to get better.

The details of Walker’s proposals are not expected to come out until February 20th, when he submits his next two-year state budget proposal to the Legislature.
