Bankrupt Milwaukee Archdiocese can't pay bills starting next April

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - Starting next April, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee says it won’t be able to pay its monthly operating expenses.

Court documents filed last week asked the U.S. Bankruptcy judge to allow it to quit paying attorneys and consultants involved in all of the legal actions going on right now.

The church would continue to pay its own attorneys to challenge sex-abuse claims.

Fees related to the bankruptcy have totaled nearly $9 million so far.

The head of the creditors committee says that fee was driven by the archdiocese’s aggressive efforts to throw out hundreds of sex abuse claims.

An attorney for the church turns that around, saying the creditors’ attorneys are pursuing frivolous actions.
