UNDATED (WRN-WSAU) Tuesday marked a day of unseasonably warm weather across much of Wisconsin, but winter is set to return in force in many parts of the state today.

Tod Pritchard with Wisconsin Emergency Management says a winter storm is expected to drop between six to ten inches of snow along a line stretching from the southwestern to northeastern parts of the state through Wednesday night. Portage, Wood, Shawano, and Waupaca counties are under a winter storm warning through 6pm Wednesday. Marathon County and areas further north are under a winter weather advisory.

Pritchard says icy conditions and blowing snow could make driving very dangerous. Anyone who does not need to be out on the roads is advised to consider staying home. Those who do venture out are urged to take current conditions into account and to make sure they have emergency supplies in their vehicle.

Following the snow, an arctic blast will hit the state that’s expected to hang around through the end of the week. Pritchard says wind chills could drop to 25 to 30 below zero. In those conditions, he says it can take as little as ten minutes to start seeing the effects of frostbite, so anyone spending time outdoors should take care to cover exposed skin.
