MARATHON CITY, Wis. (WSAU) -- The problems with heroin in central Wisconsin continue.
This time, a man called 9-1-1 because his friend was overdosing. 22-year-old Jason Manecke called for his friend 23-year-old Andrew Westberg. Westberg had loaded a syringe, but asked Manecke to inject him fearing he would miss the vein. A couple of minutes later, Westberg became unresponsive and needed medical attention.
Westberg spent three days in jail before his bond hearing. He’s free on a one thousand dollar signature bond after being charged with possession of narcotics and paraphernalia. Manecke is out on a five thousand dollar cash bond. He’s charged with manufacturing and delivering narcotics.
Westberg and Manecke will return to court on July 15th.
Officials say the use of opiates like heroin has risen dramatically in recent years. There have already been a handful of deaths this year in Marathon County tied to heroin.
