Point's East Park Commerce Center now "Certified" for rapid development

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - The state’s largest “Certified in Wisconsin” site for business development is in Stevens Point. That was made official during a Thursday morning announcement at the Portage County Library. City officials have been finishing the final details on the East Park Commerce Center.

Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Secretary Reed Hall says the Stevens Point development is ideal for new growth. “We’ve certified thirteen sites now, and this certainly is one of those that we look at as ideal with the highway access, the utilities in, the railroad access, it’s perfect for development, and to have 760 acres available for more industrial development is very, very substantial.”

Hall says the WEDC can help market the available development properties in the Certified Sites Program. “I think this will go national on our website. We work closely with developers and with site selectors around the country, and I think this will be brought to a lot of people’s attention.”

Mayor Andrew Halverson praised the WEDC for their business friendly operation and assistance. “The potential for national if not global marketing exists for this site, which really highlights the uniqueness of our partnership with WEDC as we now have the State of Wisconsin as a direct partner with us to market this site throughout the nation, and indeed, across the globe.”

Halverson says the size of this development makes it appealing for some businesses, since there are not many places you can acquire large building sites. “Between six and seven one-million square foot users could fit on this site, which represents major opportunities such as large corporate headquarters, regional distribution centers, major trucking operations, large data centers and server farms due to the uninterruptible power that traverses the site, and massive food producers.”

Michael Ostrowski is Stevens Point’s Community and Economic Development Director. He says they are also marketing the East Park Commerce Center, and confirms he is talking to a potential new business. “We have been working with a company right now on one of the 40’s towards the double-H property, but at this time, we’re still in that working process.”

Portage County Executive Patty Dreier believes the Stevens Point development will be good for the whole county, and looks forward to working with the city to bring in new business. “I’m certain that Portage County will be a partner in helping to grow the future in this area, whether it’s road construction projects, whether it’s helping to work with partners, we will be there side by side.”

East Park Commerce Center is presently undeveloped farmland bordered by the Canadian National Railroad on the north, Highway R/Brilowski Road on the west, Highway HH to the south, and Burbank Road to the east. The south-west corner of the development is only a quarter of a mile from the I-39 and double H interchange.

Marketing efforts include the city’s website and the WEDC website called LocateInWisconsin.com.
