Jessica Schaffhausen relieved Aaron got life in prison

RIVER FALLS, WI (WTAQ) - Aaron Schaffhausen’s ex-wife says she’s relieved that he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison.

Jessica Schaffhausen tells KSTP-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul that she feels safer – she can finally forget about her ex – and she’ll focus on living to honor the three daughters that Aaron killed.

The 35-year-old Schaffhausen was sentenced Monday to three life prison terms – with no chance of a supervised release – for killing Amara, Sophie, and Cecilia at the River Falls home they shared with their mother last July.

Aaron also got an extra 12-and-a-half years for trying to burn down his ex-wife’s home to try and cover up the slayings.

Prosecutors said he committed the murders to get back at Jessica. KSTP says Wisconsin officials have the option of sending Schaffhausen to a prison in another state, due to an apparent safety risk.

The station quoted Minnesota sociology professor Joshua Page as saying that people who commit crimes against kids can be targeted by other prisoners.

For now, Schaffhausen is heading to Waupun for medical and mental health exams. He could be placed in a mental health unit, after his jury said he suffered from a mental disease – but not enough to excuse him of the murders.

The defense says it will challenge that finding in an appeal.
