Safety advice for this week's heat wave

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- This week’s extreme heat has officials urging everyone to take precautions.

Emergency management and health officials say take precautions if you have to be outside or in a non-air conditioned building this week. Also, check on older or isolated neighbors who may need assistance. Do not leave anyone in a car, especially older adults and young children. No pets, either. Temperatures will rise to the mid-90s, with heat indexes reaching a potentially dangerous 95-100 degrees, and cars can get over 100 degrees very quickly.

General heat exhaustion symptoms include fainting, rash, fatigue and nausea. Skin can become clammy and moist or hot and dry. Life-threatening heat stroke can come on rapidly.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day and eat lightly. Avoid alcohol or caffeine and stay away from hot, heavy meals.

Last year, 27 people died in Wisconsin as a result of health-related issues. There has been one confirmed heat-related death in Wisconsin so far this year.  An individual in their late 80s died in Juneau County last month.

Wisconsin Department of Health Services has more information available online.
