Public meeting Saturday details implementation of deer hunt improvements

STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) - We’ll find out Saturday how the DNR could implement 62 ideas to improve Wisconsin’s deer hunting.

A public meeting will be held at UW-Stevens Point, where state officials will spell out their recommendations.

The DNR recruited 4 “action teams” that have been working since March to look for real-life ways to adopt ideas made last year by the state’s “Deer Czar” at the time, Texas hunting expert James Kroll. He proposed dozens of steps aimed at rebuilding trust between hunters and the DNR – much of which has been lost in recent years due to inaccurate deer counts and the state’s failed efforts to control chronic wasting disease.

Among other things, Kroll recommended a new deer management assistance program called “D-MAP,” in which state and local groups work together to manage deer in specific places.

Saturday’s meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Dreyfus University Center at UW-Stevens Point. It will also be shown online. For information, go to the DNR’s Web site at Wisconsin.Gov, then click on “News Releases.”

Next Wednesday, DNR officials will host an online chat about the implementation plan. That starts at noon – and again, the DNR’s Web site has more information.
