Homicide charges likely today against alleged drunk driver

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - The driver that was allegedly drunk and driving too fast when he crashed early Saturday will likely be charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle today. 

22-year-old Tim Saavedra was driving the Chevy Silverado pickup that crashed early Saturday morning on Gumz Road near County Highway II. Portage County Sheriff’s deputies say he was intoxicated. 21-year-old Stephanie Eberhardt of Wisconsin Rapids and 21-year-old Melissa Peterson-Suzda of Wisconsin Rapids died. 21-year-old Lee Hogan of Rudolph is hospitalized and slowly improving. Saavedra is in custody and is expected to make an initial court appearance Monday.

Peterson-Suzda’s was a hostess at Chili’s in Stevens Point. Her funeral is set for Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids. Arrangements for Eberhardt are being finalized by Ritchay Funeral Home, and have not yet been announced.
