Mallards top Woodchucks 7-1 Sunday

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU-Woodchucks) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks were defeated by the Madison Mallards 7-1, as Mallards’ starting pitcher Reilly Hovis pitched six scoreless innings.

The Mallards struck first in the top of the second inning as Erik Forgione’s ground ball got through the right side of the infield. Mike Fitzgerald came into score on the play after he hit a double earlier in the inning giving the Mallards an early 1-0 lead.

A groundout to short by Drew Weeks scoring Mike Reuvekamp on the play gave the Mallards an insurance run as they now lead 2-0. A wild throw from Woodchucks’ starting pitcher Danny Young on a pickoff attempt at first base allowed Luke Meeteer to score increasing the Mallards’ lead to 3-0. The Mallards continued to build on their lead in the top of the sixth inning when Jason Goldstein and Meeteer came into score off Forgione’s single to left field. An error by Austin Diemer allowed both of the runners to score to give the Mallards a 5-0 lead.

The Mallards tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning as Fitzgerald brought home Weeks on a double down the left field now giving the Mallards a 6-0 lead. The Woodchucks ended the Mallards’ shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning as Jake Jefferies hit a single up the middle to bring home Tyler Stieb on the play.

The Mallards answered with a run of their own in the top of the ninth inning to lead 7-1 which would be the final in this one.

The Woodchucks will have a three day break as the Northwoods League All-Star game will take place in Eau Claire.

The Woodchucks will return to action on Thursday, July 25 as they begin a three-game series in Eau Claire. The Woodchucks will return to Athletic Park on Sunday, July 28 as the Thunder Bay Border Cats come to Wausau.
