Wisconsin lottery slaes increase by 11% over five year period

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin Lottery sales have jumped by 11-percent over a five-year period.

The Legislative Audit Bureau said Tuesday that almost $548-million in lottery tickets were sold during the year ending June 30th. That compares to $495-million in the 2007-‘08 fiscal year.

The increase came despite the fact that the entire Great Recession had taken place during the five years that were surveyed.

Auditors said the addition of the Mega Millions game had something to do with the higher sales – as did the price increase in Powerball tickets to two-dollars almost two years ago, and the advent of 20-dollar instant games.

The audit report said 58-and-a-half percent of ticket revenues were given to winners in the 2012 fiscal year. The law requires that 50-percent be awarded as prizes.

The rest of the profits go toward property tax relief. The lottery contributed $708-million in tax relief to Wisconsin homeowners from July of 2007 through June of 2012.
