AMHERST, Wis (WSAU) - A fundraising event to fight cancer takes place tonight in Amherst. It’s the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Several teams are seeking donations, plus there will be hourly activities from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning at Amherst High School.
One of the team leaders is Ron Gonzales, who says the money raised goes to a good cause. "We're raising funds and walking and having a good time trying to raise money for American Cancer Society so they can do more research.”
For Gonzales, he knows first-hand how important it is to help fight cancer. "Well, I'm a cancer survivor myself, and so is my wife, so we figured it would be for a good cause. That's why we do it."
Gonzales says there’s meaning behind the all-night activities at Relay For Life. "The reason we go all night long is because once you are diagnosed with cancer, it kind of gets dark in your life, and it gets darker as the night goes along. There's a lot of people out there that have gone through this, and finally we go through chemo, radiation, so on and so forth. Then we start getting better and the dawn of light comes, and hopefully back to normal, living a normal life if we can."
Anyone that wants to take part or donate can do so online.
