WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - An open meetings complaint has been filed against the village of Weston by the union that represents their firefighters.

The International Association of Firefighters Local 415 held a press conference this morning outside the Marathon County courthouse. President Jeremy Kopp says they want to make sure the public knows what's going on. "Biggest hope right now would be to take a step back and see what all our resources are and combine them and make the right decision. Consolidation is not a bad thing, we just want to make it right."

Weston and Rib Mountain both plan to dissolve their fire departments and create a new fire district. Weston administrator Dan Guild said on Tuesday that the planning for those meetings was done between staff for the municipalities, with a final vote taken in open session in a joint meeting. The union says more planning took place in closed session meetings over the past several months, and that's a violation of the open meetings laws.

The union is asking for the consolidation process to be halted until more public hearings can be made. The district attorney's office declined to comment this morning, saying that they'd just received the complaint are are going over it. They have 20 days to respond.
