WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Wausau fire crews rescued a teenage girl from under the Thomas Street bridge on Sunday.
Battalion chief Paul Czarapata says the girl and some of her friends decided to go swimming in the river near Fern Island. "They said they wanted to go out by the sandbar that's usually out there." The problem is the river is deeper and faster than usual, and the current swept her downstream towards the bridge. "Even if you could get out the sand bar, it'd sweep most people off of it."
Czarapata says the girl was very lucky. "One of our water rescue instructors was the first on the scene, and he was able to throw a rope to her and drag her in."
Officials say swimming in the river at all is not recommended right now. Czarapata says there's just too much water. "We've had so much rain and the late snow melt has left the water level real high and left us with a high current."
