State Democrats call for increased funding to schools, end of voucher expansion

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - State democrats met in Wausau today to call for a restoration of funding to schools that was cut in the last state budget.

They're calling for a return of $275 dollars per student funding, and an end to the voucher expansion. State Representative Mandy Wright says the school districts need to have the chance to gain back ground that was taken from them. "The current plan to increase spending by $100 is just treading water." She says the $275 number is a compromise of half of what was cut in the 2011 state budget and represents a compromise on the issue.

She's also calling for an end to the proposed school voucher program expansion. Wright calls it an unnecessary measure. "We're taking away funding for already cash-strapped districts and sending it to private, unaccountable businesses."

Representative Katrina Shankland says she believes the budget measures have a shot in the State Senate. "There's several moderate Republicans that are uncomfortable with the tax-increases attached to the voucher program."

Wright and Shankland will be introducing those amendments to the state budget tomorrow.
