Wisconsin Congressional members weigh in on DOMA ruling

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - As you might expect, both of Wisconsin’s openly gay Members of Congress were ecstatic over the U.,S. Supreme Court ruling which ended the Defense of Marriage Act.

The justices ruled that legally-married same-sex couples have the same benefits as heterosexual married couples.

However, the court rejected a chance to strike down Wisconsin’s constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions.

Freshman House Democrat Mark Pocan of Madison married his male partner in Canada in 2006. He said they still face barriers due to the Wisconsin law.

Still, Pocan called it an important day.

Senate Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin said the ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act affirmed that all Americans are created equal under the law.

She said the ruling quote, “made a strong statement for equality and freedom, overturning discrimination against gay and lesbian American citizens simply because of who they love.”

Meanwhile, Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki says the court ruling will not change Catholic teachings about the sacrament of marriage. He said the recognition of one-man, one-woman marriage long precedes Christianity – and while the Supreme Court re-defined the national law, it cannot re-define the law as God created it.
