STEVENS POINT, WI  (UWSP)  – The UW-Stevens Point athletic department officially released its 2013 football schedule today. The 10-game docket includes two night games at Goerke Park to open the season, along with a balanced schedule of home and away (five each) contests for the first time since 2007.

Pointers football to play two home games under the lights in 2013

UWSP will kick off the season at home on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. versus Rockford University in conjunction with the 26th annual Spud Bowl. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Just two weeks later (following a bye week), the Pointers will return to the pitch in another evening contest when the squad hosts Dubuque at 6 p.m. as part of the 4th annual Pink Game festivities.  The 2012 match-up between the two teams was a 55-14 victory for UWSP, the first of the Coach Journell era. “We worked really hard to build a balanced, competitive schedule,” said second year head coach Tom Journell. “It was important to our coaches and student-athletes to play a balanced schedule and play nonconference games that get us ready for the always difficult conference season. I know our team is elated to be playing under the lights, and not just once, but twice."

The first road contest of the season comes on Sept. 28 when the Pointers head south to face NCAA Division III playoff participant North Central College. The defending College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Champions rolled to an 8-2 regular season and advanced to the second round of the Division III playoffs.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season opens on October 5 when the Falcons of UW-River Falls visit Community Stadium at Goerke Park. The date will also serve as the annual homecoming game. Also included in the five-game home slate are conference contests UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater, rounding out the home schedule on Oct. 19 and Nov. 9, respectively. WIAC road contests include UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout.
