Packers Don't Franchise Anyone

GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) The Green Bay Packers have decided not to use their franchise tag to keep receiver Greg Jennings around for at least one more year. Yesterday was the deadline for N-F-L teams to use their franchise and transition tags – and the Packers were among 24 teams which did not use either one.

It was speculated that Jennings might be tagged, to prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent next Tuesday. But the Packers would have had to pay him 10-and-a-half million dollars for a one-year contract. Media reports say the 29-year-old Jennings is looking for a longer-range deal of 12-to-14 million dollars a year – but it’s not clear whether he could actually get that.

Even if he leaves, the Packers have a solid receiving corps with Randall Cobb, James Jones, Jordy Nelson, and tight end Jermichael Finley – with newcomers Jeremy Ross and Jarrett Boykin coming up the pipeline.

The Packers are a reported 22-million dollars under their salary cap – money they’ll need to reach new deals with their stars like Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews.
