Genocide comment during mining debate riles Assembly leader

MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  Part of last week’s Assembly debate on the mining bill upset the Assistant Majority Leader.

71st District Representative Katrina Shankland from Stevens Point argued against the mining bill, and at one point said the mining reform bill will contribute to genocide for destroying the land and water around the Bad River reservation.

Representative Jim Steineke said in a statement, “I am appalled at Representative Shankland’s accusation on the Assembly floor that a bill creating hundreds of good paying jobs to an economically-depressed area equates to genocide.”

Steineke felt the comments were insensitive to history’s real victims of genocide. Shankland defended her statement saying she was repeating what the Bad River Tribe has said about mining. She claims tribal leaders told her supporting this bill would be equivalent to genocide. “I am saying that today because they said it and you should listen to them. Polluting an entire watershed for profit is contributing to genocide.”
