Judge denies request to reduce $1M bond for Trevino

WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - A prosecutor said a Minnesota man apparently planned to flee the country if he’s freed on bail for the suspected murder of his wife who’s from the Wausau area.

But 39-year-old Jeffrey Trevino won’t be going anywhere, after a judge Thursday rejected a defense request to reduce his $1 million bond.

Trevino is charged with second degree murder after his wife – Schofield high school graduate Kira Steger Trevino – disappeared on February 21st. Her body has not been found, but police said they had evidence of a bloody struggle in the couple’s bedroom.

Prosecutor Richard Dusterhoft said jailors secretly recorded phone calls in which Trevino asked relatives to retrieve a briefcase under his bed which has a passport – and he urged them not to put up their houses as collateral to get him out on bail.

Dusterhoft told a judge, “The implication is he intends to flee, and he doesn’t want anyone to lose their house.” He said police have confiscated the passport and briefcase.

Trevino’s attorney, John Conard, said the million-dollar bail is unreasonable – and he disagreed that his client is a risk to flee, noting that he has a 14-year-old daughter and other family in the area.

Trevino is due back in court March 29th.
