Hundreds upset over slain Tosa cop Sebena's exclusion from national memorial

WAUWATOSA, WI (WTAQ) - Hundreds of people are not happy with a decision to leave out the name of a murdered Wauwatosa police officer on a national police memorial.

The National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Fund has tentatively decided not to include Jennifer Sebena. That’s because the group has classified her death as an act of domestic violence.

Her 30-year-old husband Ben Sebena has pleaded not guilty by insanity to a homicide charge. He’s accused of killing his wife while she was on duty last Christmas Eve.

Jim Palmer of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association says it’s a travesty to omit Jennifer from the national memorial – and he said the national group’s board will meet Thursday to reconsider.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said an online petition to include Sebena had almost 2,300 names as of 11 a.m. Wednesday – and there’s a Facebook page that’s gathering support for her inclusion.

Palmer says the state’s law enforcement memorial will have Sebena on it.

On the petition, Jennifer Gerke of Menomonee Falls wrote that the national board is, “putting too much emphasis on her murderer, and not the fact that she was gunned down while on duty.”

Palmer says his group has contacted individual board members for the national memorial. He said Sebena fits the requirements to be included – and there’s no reason for her to be excluded.
