New falconry rules to be considered by state Natural Resources Board

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - About 100 falconers in Wisconsin would be affected by new rules to be considered next Wednesday by the state Natural Resources Board.

The state needs to revise its falconry rules, so they comply with federal standards.

Until now, it has not been a problem because the state and federal governments have jointly issued falconry permits. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is getting out of that business – and the states will be the only ones to license falconry operations starting next year.

Under the DNR’s proposed changes, Wisconsin operators would be able to keep more raptors. They’d have more time to report the capture of a raptor in the wild for training purposes. And falconers would no longer need state permits to use raptors for education.
