Northern tribes pushing for more walleye spearing in lakes

RHINELANDER, WI (WXPR) - A DNR official is hoping to come to a negotiated settlement with the Chippewa tribes concerning walleye bag limits for anglers on northern Wisconsin lakes.

The Chippewa bands last week gave the state their declarations of a treaty-guaranteed fish harvest. 535 lakes were named in the ceded territory, with 197 lakes resulting in a one walleye per day bag limit for hook and line anglers.

Waters named in the one-bag limit were the Three Lakes, Chain of Lakes and the Eagle River Chain. The remaining lakes will have a two walleye bag limit, with seven lakes at three. Within the past 15 years, no more than 10 lakes have been set at the one limit.

Officials are still hoping for negotiation. DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp said Monday the new declarations are a challenge to long-standing relationships with the tribes.
