Committee to vote on allowing ATC to build new power lines outside Wisconsin

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A Wisconsin Senate committee is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a bill to let the American Transmission Company build new power lines outside of Wisconsin.

ATC is owned by the state’s largest utilities. The Legislature approved its creation 10 years ago to come up with a big picture for meeting Wisconsin’s electric transmission needs.

One of its vice presidents, John Flynn, recently told lawmakers that ATC has expanded from 50 employees to 600 during its lifetime. And by building out of state projects, Flynn said the transmission firm could create more Wisconsin jobs and keep moving forward.

Assembly Republican Mark Honadel of South Milwaukee said the bill would not affect electric rate-payers in the Badger State. But members of a town energy planning committee in Vernon County said the bill appears to be designed solely to increase ATC’s profits, while doing little or nothing to make Wisconsin’s energy more reliable.

The federal government sets a 12 percent return on ATC’s investments in transmission lines.
