Air traffic controller cuts disappoint Walker

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  The recent announcement that Central Wisconsin Airport and several other regional Wisconsin airports will lose their local air traffic controllers is drawing criticism from Governor Scott Walker.

Walker is critical of how President Obama is arbitrarily selecting his cuts under the sequester. During a recent trip to Washington D.C. with other Governors, Walker criticized Obama for his selection of sequester cuts. “I actually asked the President why he couldn’t consider doing what other Governors have done in both parties during the past two years, and that is, we put budget priorities on the table. We got our cabinet together, and we found out ways to make reasonable and prudent reductions.”

The Governor believes there are other places to cut federal spending without affecting important services like local air traffic control. “There are plenty of other areas that have been identified that would be just as cost effective that would not require towers to be shut down” adding, “My hope is that we’ll find a way to work with the Federal administration to make that reasonable adjustment.”

Walker says he is looking at possible ways to help restore airport control tower operators should Washington do nothing, but there is no specific plan or funding mechanism at this time.
