Early Names Surface In Bucks Coach Search

MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Stan Van Gundy and Kelvin Sampson are among the names being tossed around as the next Milwaukee Bucks’ coach. Jim Boylan was let go yesterday, after a late-season collapse in which the Bucks were swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the Miami Heat. Boylan went 22-and-28 in the regular season, after replacing Scott Skiles in January.

General manager John Hammond says there’s no timetable for choosing a replacement. He said the Bucks’ vacancy could be an attractive one, considering the state of the team’s roster. He said the Bucks have some solid defenders in Larry Sanders and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute – plus other young talent like John Henson.

Hammond also said the Bucks have a full complement of draft picks, and up to 20-million dollars in salary cap space. With all that, the G-M says Milwaukee offers a real coaching opportunity.

Van Gundy did not coach this past season, after heading Miami and Orlando for over seven years. He led the Magic to the 2009 N-B-A Finals – and he’s a former college coach at Wisconsin. Sampson is now the associate head coach at Houston, after serving as a Bucks’ assistant for three years.

The Rockets trail Oklahoma City three-games-to-two in their first-round playoff series, and Charlotte has sought permission to interview Sampson after his current team is eliminated.
