RICE LAKE, WI  (WSAU)  -  You don’t have to travel far to find winter’s last big blast. Western and northwestern Wisconsin went from the 70’s Tuesday and early Wednesday to heavy, wet snow Wednesday night and Thursday.

Wisconsin’s Department of Emergency Management says several communities lost electricity due to the snow, putting around 16-thousand customers in the dark. They say the hardest hit areas were around Menomonie, Spring Valley, Hudson, Amery, Birchwood and Hayward.

Snowfall amounts varied from nearly 18 inches of snow at Hayward and 17 inches at Rice Lake and Cameron to as little as 2 inches in parts of Douglas and Price counties. Trees crashed on cars and homes in the Menomonie area. A barn near Rock Falls collapsed from the weight of the new snow.

Some schools cancelled classes Wednesday due to the deep snow.
