DNR: Wolf population may have dropped slightly after inaugural hunt

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s wolf population has stopped growing – and it might have dropped slightly after last year’s inaugural hunting season.

The DNR said Monday that the state has between 809 and 834 grey wolves, still more than twice as much as the agency’s original goal of 350. The new minimum figure is six more than a year ago, and the maximum is 46 more.

Hunters shot their inaugural quota of 117 wolves last fall, in a season that lasted three months shorter than expected.

Another 126 animals were killed by vehicle crashes, illegal killings, depredation control, and other unknown causes.

Officials say the DNR takes the population count in the late winter, when the total is project to be at its lowest.
