State law changes may be needed for ADA voucher school oversight

by

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The state school superintendent says the Legislature might have to change state laws to address federal concerns with Wisconsin’s private school voucher program.

The U.S. Justice Department has told the state’s education agency to make sure that disabled students who get tax vouchers to attend private schools are not discriminated against.

The federal government said the state must improve its oversight of voucher schools, and change its practices for enrolling and serving disabled youngsters.

On Monday, state Superintendent Tony Evers said his department might not have the authority to do everything the Justice Department asks – and his office is working with Washington on the matter.

Governor Scott Walker’s office says it’s also reviewing the order.
